Albion road residences

These two new hours in Ashburton reinterpret the pitched roofs, overhangs and masonry character of the neighbourhood. The architecture draws on the fine-grained residential context, incorporating angled and hipped forms.

The simplicity, solidity and permanence of brick is employed in a variety of ways. A palette of three neutral grey bricks dapple the building’s surface while hit and miss brickwork and vertical brick fins break down the solidity of the envelope.

The varying openings in the brickwork dissolve the mass of the wall, creating a gradient of transparency. The weight of brick is subverted to create a veil over glazing that creates privacy and embeds the house in the surrounding context.
